PermalinkBritain has ‘first dibs’ on Greenland, island’s last Danish
minister says
Donald Trump would need Keir Starmer’s approval for his new
‘aggressive’ Arctic strategy which sent Denmark into
‘crisis mode’
Donald Trump has made clear to Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s
prime minister, that he wants to place Greenland under
American control.
But Mr Høyem said that Mr Trump would require approval from
Sir Keir Starmer because of an undertaking signed in 1917,
the first time the US was interested in acquiring the island.
“If Trump tried to buy Greenland, he would have to ask London
first,” Mr Høyem told The Sunday Times.
. . .
Interesting.
However it's very unclear WHAT Trump REALLY wants.
He's known to talk, say things more for "effect"
than to actually be serious. Throws off the enemies.
Kinda throws off the allies too ...
An "Imperial USA" ... that's just a no-go really.
It's the kind of shit Russia and China do.
Denmark DID immediately pledge rather a lot of money
to increasing patrols/security around Greenland. That
may be good enough, what Trump really wanted.
Greenland itself - unless you were caught nekked with
a general's daughter you DON'T wanna wind up in fuckin'
Greenland. It's not really a place for humans. Also,
with satellites/subs/planes/missiles/etc the utility of
LAND bases there is much less than in the 50s.
If we just MUST have a radar station in frozen hell
then just RENT a square of land (not much of it) in
eastern Greenland. We've done this before and still
have Thule AF Base (now known as Pituffik Space Base).
We lease the land. No biggie. I guess the locals get
a cut. GoogleEarth eastern Greenland sometime ... wow.
Grand-Dad, on his way to the USA in the late 1800s,
made a stop in Greenland to see if there were any
ops for farming. His instant eval - HELL NO ! :-)
