PermalinkDOGE finds millions of instances of social security fraud in
database including a 360-year-old and 'vampires'
. . .
Sorry, not true - just LOOKS that way.
The IRS still operates heavily on ancient
COBOL-programmed computers. Nothing wrong
with COBOL or even old computers that still
work but old 'fixes' for data problems have
persisted too. Didn't seem so relevant in
the 1950s/60s ... but now they stand out.
Bad/missing birthday - the system tends to
default to an 1870s date. Had to put SOMETHING
in the data field after all ...
Until the early 1900s, a lot of people had NO
official proof of birth/birthdays. Such info
was generally recorded in The Olde Family Bible,
and thus was assumed to be Truth sworn before God.
On NewsNation, Cuomo exposed this issue, and
why it makes it LOOK like so many vampires
are getting SS. Actually, I guess previously
wage-earning vampires WOULD qualify ...
OK, COBOL is a ridiculously-wordy computer
language where they imagined they were making
the programs read 'like normal language'. Nope.
Google it.
However those arrow-tie crew-cut Dilberts of the
era were DAMNED GOOD programmers. If you can
do COBOL there are still lucrative careers
out there for you, keeping a huge volume of
that old code running - biz/banks/medical/govt,
it's EVERYWHERE and too expensive to do over.
If it Just Works you DON'T throw it away.
In any case ... DOGE/Musk really should have looked
into this before issuing the errant claim. There's
PLENTY of Real Waste in the deep state, no need
to INVENT any.
